The Canal du Midi is one of France’s most peaceful and picturesque waterways, a green ribbon of water winding along medieval villages. The old dream of the king of France to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean was realised in the XVII century by the baron Riquet. 10.000 workers participated on what was considered as the biggest work of the century. The canal du Midi was classed in 1996 as part of the world heritage by the UNESCO. The Canal du Midi is in perfect harmony with the beautiful scenery and the variety of different spots. Direction West you will discover the Minervois and Lauragais region, the medieval city of Carcassonne and the tiny vineyard villages along the towpath. After Toulouse the canal lateral à la Garonne winds through the region of Gascogne so well know for the excellent food , the unspoiled scenery and of course not to forget the Armagnac, and the Foie Gras ,possibility to visit a wine Chateau in the Bordeaux area . Direction East towards the end of the Canal du Midi you enter the Etang the Thau, a big lake by the Mediterranean sea, 17 km large and 4 km wide, when you reach the port of Sète,you enter the canal du Rhône à Sète which follows the seaside until the medieval walled town of Aigues Mortes. You will meet the flamingos,the black bulls and the white camargue horses.You are in the heart of the Provence –Camargue ,with beautiful towns like Avignon , Arles and Nîmes colourful villages such as St. Remy, les Baux and Uzès .
